Join us at Freedom Park on Saturday, April 13, 3-4 p.m. to discover the little-known history of one of the first free black settlements in the United States! Col. Lafayette Jones Jr., a descendant of those who lived on the Free Black Settlement, will give a presentation on the rich history of this area. Through his research, you’ll get a glimpse of 18th century life in James City County more than 60 years before the Emancipation Proclamation. This free presentation, suitable for all ages, will take place in the Interpretive Center, 5537 Centerville Road. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Col. Jones will also be available to sign copies of his book “My Great, Great, Grandfather’s Journey to an Island of Freedom in the Middle of Slavery.” For more information, please call 757-259-4022.For the complete list of Parks & Recreation programs and events, please visit our website or call 757-259-4200.
