Business License Tax Calculator & Filing Form

Use this calculator only if you had a business license last year from James City County. If not, you must first apply for the license

Important: Read this entire page before beginning.

Business license holders must calculate their own tax and remit payment with their business license return by March 1 annually. This page provides a tax calculator for your convenience, but does not allow for online filing of your business license return. After using the calculator, you must print the completed form, sign it and mail it along with a check to the address at the bottom of the page.

All Businesses

Use the calculator at the bottom of this page to calculate your 2024 tax. Second year businesses (whose first business license in James City County was last year) must also calculate their estimate-to-actual adjustment. You may contact our staff for assistance with your calculation.

If prior year gross receipts were zero, input “0”.

Restaurants, Stores and Others Serving or Selling Alcoholic Beverages

Calculate your license tax on all gross receipts, including sales of all beverages. Add the flat fees shown on your return to the tax.

Contractors

All contractors must submit complete renewal package which must consist of the following:

  • NEW FOR 2024:  Include a completed Virginia Form 61A, “Contractor’s Certificate of Workers’ Compensation Insurance.”  Go to www.workcomp.virginia.gov/forms/certificate-workers-compensation-insurance-form-61a for form and instructions. The form must be completed with the same business name and entity type that is on your business license and SCC certificate. Do not send a certificate from your insurance agent. The state no longer offers online filing.
  • A copy of your current Virginia Class A, B, or C contractor’s license.
    • Include list of all subcontractors, including full name and address, and amount paid in James City County during 2023.

Names and entity types on all contractor documents (business license, state contractor's license and VWC letter of acknowledgement) must match exactly. Incomplete or mismatched contractor renewal packages will not be processed, and will be considered late if not completed by March 1.

Out of Town Contractors

There is no tax if your James City County gross receipts were below $25,000 in 2023. However, you must still complete, sign and return your form, along with the documents listed above. You will be issued a no-charge license.

Late Filers

After September 30 of the license year, you must include a copy of your complete prior year business federal tax return with your renewal form.
