Once land development files are closed they are sent to the County's Records Management office. Information often referred to as public records resides at several locations in the James City County and City of Williamsburg area.
Existing Structures
Information on existing structures (zoning files, site plans, building permits, accessory permits, wetland files, sign permits, rezoning files, master plans and subdivisions files) are available.
Proposed & Ongoing Cases
Building Safety & Permits Division If information is needed on proposed or ongoing cases.
Circuit Court Records
To search Circuit Court records, an account name and password are required. For more information, visit the Secure Records page. For information on the various types of records available, contact the Clerk of the Circuit Court's Office.
Recorded Plats
Recorded plats or deeds are located at the Clerk of the Circuit Court's Office at the Courthouse.

- What records do we maintain?

All closed-out zoning files, site plans, building permits, accessory permits, wetland files, sign permits, rezoning files, master plans, subdivisions files and etc., are available in our office.
- What records and drawings are retained permanently?

All documents and drawings are retained permanently, except for residential plans.
- Do we keep residential building plans permanently?

No, residential building plans are retained for 5 years after the certificate of occupancy is issued.
