The Economic Development Authority of James City County, Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC), the City of Williamsburg Economic Development Authority, Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance and the Williamsburg Area Restaurant Association are pleased to announce that six students graduated from ChefsGO 1.0 program on Thursday, Aug. 31. Williamsburg Landing hosted both the graduation and a reception.

Graduating students included:

  • Andrew Aczel
  • Jakeia Dickerson
  • Emma Espinoza
  • Maribel Hernandez
  • Tyler Morton
  • Jeff Rouse

The students participated in the pilot workforce development program that was offered by TNCC in partnership with Williamsburg area chefs and restaurants with financial support from the Economic Development Authority of James City County, the City of Williamsburg Economic Development Authority, Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance and the Williamsburg Area Restaurant Association.

Students received a certificate following eight weeks of classroom and kitchen training taught by renowned local chefs, followed by paid work experience in one of several participating local restaurants. All students learned the basic fundamentals of a full service restaurant. Students were introduced to everything from knife skills to preparing sauces and soups, proper kitchen sanitation, food storage and much more.

“We are thrilled that we were able to allow six individuals to explore careers in the culinary arts, an important industry in our local community,” stated Robin Carson, ChefsGO program coordinator. “This unique workforce development experience allowed the students to see if culinary was the right fit for their futures and we look forward to continuing the program next spring.”

Applications for the 2018 ChefsGO program will be accepted beginning in October. Applicants are not required to have cooking skills or restaurant experience, but must be 18 by Sept. 1, 2018. Scholarships are available for students in need. More information is available online. Students who have questions should contact Sherri Thrift at 757-897-3462 or by email at thrifts@tncc.edu.
