August is Craft Beer Month

Craft Beer 17

August is Craft Beer Month in Virginia and in James City County, we are happy to celebrate. It is well documented that when the settlers first arrived to Jamestown they were already concocting colonial brews to make the water drinkable. If you’d like to read more about the history of beer in Virginia, the Virginia Tourism Corporation recently published a great post.

We are also excited about the grand opening of Billsburg Brewery this fall at the James City County Marina. Billsburg will offer a variety of beers and their tasting room has excellent views.

Another exciting announcement that happened earlier this summer was that Alewerks is opening a new tasting room at the Williamsburg Premium Outlets. We can’t wait to be able to do a little shopping and grab a brew.

The Wine Seller in Monticello Marketplace offers craft beer tastings on Thursdays and sells an every changing variety of craft brews. They have pints to enjoy in the store and growlers to fill and take home. If you prefer bottled craft beer, they offer that as well.

Whether you are craving a brown ale, IPA, wheat beer or stout, there are numerous restaurants in the County that offer large selections of beer and some even offer growler fills.

This restaurant on Strawberry Plains Road has a large and rotating list of 31 craft beers to pick from including beers from breweries in Greater Williamsburg! They offer 3.5 ounce sizes so you can pick a variety of beers to enjoy and they also offer 32 oz. and 64 oz. growler fills. (Save money if you B.Y.O.G. - bring your own growler!)

Daddyo’s Tavern offers a variety of beverages include craft beers. They offer seasonal taps, so make sure to ask what’s currently being offered.

With a slew of rotating taps, there’s always something new to try at Oceans & Ale near the Williamsburg Premium Outlets. There are more than 20 different draft beers on tap. Oceans & Ale also offers beer flights – four beers in four ounce glasses.

Located in New Town, Paul’s Deli and Neighborhood Restaurant offers outside patio dining in addition to their inside area. They have a variety of taps that are accompanied by a large and diverse menu.

Bonus beer tip– Mark your calendars for the annual Bier Fest at Busch Gardens in September. The dates are Sept. 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 16 and 17. The park’s Oktoberfest area turns into the ultimate craft beer festival with traditional German food, music and tons of beer.

Are there any hot spots for craft beer that we missed?
